Short answer: no, ISO 9001 does not cover health and safety. The ISO standard for occupational health and safety is ISO 45001.
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems. It has nothing to do with health and safety, which has its own ISO standard (ISO 45001).
What does ISO 9001 cover?
The ISO 9001 standard is designed to help organisations boost quality and customer satisfaction through the use of a quality management system (QMS).
Any organisation of any size - including sole traders - can benefit from implementing a robust QMS and obtaining ISO 9001 certification.
A good quality management system focuses on:
- Achieving consistent high quality and continuous improvement
- Meeting customer expectations and resolving complaints efficiently
- Streamlining processes and reducing waste throughout your organisation
Note that none of this has much to do with health and safety. While there may be some overlap between the safety of your workplace and the quality of your output, ISO 9001 is not directly concerned with occupational health and safety - there's a completely different ISO standard for that.
Health and safety management systems
ISO 45001 is the globally-recognised standard for occupational health and safety management systems (often shortened to OHSMS).
A company can obtain ISO 45001 certification for its OHSMS in much the same way as it can obtain ISO 9001 certification for its QMS.
And that's only the tip of the iceberg. Additional certifications exist for environmental management systems (ISO 14001) and information security management systems (ISO 27001) to name just two.
